This comprehensive guide delves into the many benefits of LED ceiling lights. Not only do they help you cut down on your energy bills, but they also enhance your energy consumption rating. We also provide a user-friendly, step-by-step guide on installing LED ceiling lights in your home, allowing you to start reaping the financial rewards of energy efficiency right away.
What is the best light to save energy?
If you're looking for the best energy-saving lights, the only bulbs you should buy are LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes).
The best energy-saving light bulbs can convert the most electricity into light rather than heat. Generally, LEDs are about 90% efficient, converting 90% of energy into light, CFL bulbs are 85% efficient, and incandescent bulbs are only 10% efficient.
Are LED bulbs energy efficient?
Yes! Compared to traditional incandescent, halogen and even compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), LEDs use significantly less electricity to emit the same light level. They do this by converting more energy into light rather than heat, making them the most energy-efficient option.
LEDs emit very little heat and can help reduce the cost of cooling your home and buildings.
Here is a chart showing how much more energy-efficient LED bulbs are than traditional bulbs. You can see that LEDs require far fewer watts to create the same lumens than other bulb types.
Environmental impact
As well as being more energy-efficient, LED bulbs don't contain toxic chemicals such as mercury like in CFLs, making them safer and easier to recycle when disposing of them
Brightness and light quality.
LEDs also offer better brightness and colour quality. Coming in various light tempretures, you can choose the specific bulb colour to suit different needs in your home.
Instant on
LEDs provide full brightness instantly without the "warm-up" time you get with CFLs.
The latest technology.
Due to the advances in LED technology, gone are the days of LEDs taking a while to reach full brightness and emitting a low hum. LED light bulbs now offer endless options, for example, motion sensor technology to help protect your outdoor perimeter. Or, choose any shape or style you like, for example, the Edison-style light bulb designs that incorporate LED technology so you can create the interior look you want, save money and be more environmentally friendly without sacrificing style.
Yes! While the initial cost of LED lights may be higher than other bulb options, they offer long-term savings on your energy bills. As they require less electricity to get the same amount of light, you will see instant reductions to your electricity bill.
LED ceiling lights or any other lights around your house have a much longer lifespan than other bulb types. An LED light can last up to 25,000 hours. If you left it on 24/7, you would only need to replace it every 15 years, compared to incandescent bulbs, which only last up to 1,000 hours and CFLs, which last 8,000 hours.
How to install LED ceiling lights
Of course, the quick way to benefit instantly from energy-saving LEDs to to swap your old bulbs with LED bulbs. But if you also want to refresh your ceiling, here is our step-by-step guide on installing a new LED ceiling light.
Remember, replacing your old light with an LED ceiling light does require working with electrical wiring, so if you're not confident, always call a professional to assist. Otherwise, ensure you have all the necessary safety gear before you start.
Tools you will need
Your new LED ceiling light fixture • Screwdriver (flathead and Philips) • Voltage tester
Wire strippers • Wire nuts or connectors • Electrical tape
Ladder or step stool •. Drill (if new holes are needed) • Electrical-grade safety goggles and gloves
Steps to install an LED ceiling light
- Turn off the power. Before dismantling your ceiling light, turn off the power at the circuit breaker to the room were you're installing the light. Use your voltage tester to ensure no current is running through the fixing.
- Remove the old fixture (if replacing one). Remove the old light fixture by unscrewing the screws or bolts that hold it in place. Then, carefully lower the fixture and disconnect the wiring by unscrewing the wire nuts and separating the wires.
Inspect the junction box. Ensure the electrical junction box is securely attached to the ceiling. If it's loose, tighten the screws or use mounting brackets.
Prepare the wires. Connect the earth wire (usually green and yellow) from the LED ceiling fixture to the earth wire from the ceiling. Then, connect the neutral wire (usually blue) from the fixture to the ceiling wire. Next, connect the hot wire (usually brown) from the fixture to the corresponding wire in the ceiling. Lastly, secure each connection with wire nuts and wrap them in electrical tape.
Attach the LED fixture to the ceiling. Align the fixture's mounting place or bracket with the junction box and secure it with screws until it's tightly fastened. Attach the LED light fixture to the mounting plate or bracket according to the manufacturer's instructions. You may have to screw the fixture into the mounting place or secure it with clips.
Insert bulbs and cover. If your LED ceiling light has replaceable bulbs, install them now. Otherwise, ensure any integrated LED components are securely in place. Attach any fixture covers, diffusers or shades as required.
Turn on the power. Once everything is securely installed, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Test the light switch to ensure the LED ceiling light operates correctly.
Tip 1
Always double-check that the power is off before handling any electrical wiring.
Tip 2
If you're unsure about any step in the process, consult a licensed electrician.
Tip 3
Use a sturdy ladder or step stool to reach the ceiling safely. If you feel unsteady, ask someone to help or hold the ladder at the bottom while you fit the light.
